EION and Telesat to Develop On-Demand Satellite Technology

$2.5 million project with funding led by Precarn and the Ontario Centres of Excellence

OTTAWA, Canada – April 10, 2006 – Ottawa-based EION Wireless and Canada’s leading satellite operator Telesat are collaborating to develop an intelligent communications system for satellite broadband services. Once implemented, the system will increase the efficiency of delivering IP over satellite to rural communities in Canada – resulting in lower cost satellite services.

The project, being partially funded by Precarn Incorporated and the Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE), will set a new benchmark by introducing the advantage of intelligent processing to the satellite communications sector. It will also include research performed by professors and students of the University of Waterloo, Carleton University and Algonquin College.

“With the successful launch and operation of Telesat’s Anik F2 satellite, Canada has been a leader in the area of advanced broadband satellite systems,” says Paul Johnston, President and CEO of Precarn Incorporated. “Through Precarn’s support of this project we are playing a key role in once again presenting Canadian technology on a world stage.”

The project will apply intelligence concepts to various aspects of the satellite communication system. When deployed, the system will provide increased throughput, supply on-demand availability and deliver cost efficiency to all end users. EION will develop state-of-the-art software that is able to allocate bandwidth to meet just-in-time requirements while minimizing the unused portion.

“As a leading provider of rugged wireless communication solutions, EION is well suited to perform the research and development,” says Dr. Kalai Kalaichelvan, Chairman and CEO of EION. “Working in cooperation with our partners in this project, we will be strengthening the communication infrastructure for thousands of Canadians by providing a solution with ubiquitous coverage. As satellite technology is becoming mainstream for businesses and consumer services, there is a pressing requirement for increased availability and more efficient, broadband satellite services supporting Quality of Service.”

“In our 37 years of satellite communications innovation, strong collaborative working relationships have been part of the key to Telesat’s success,” said Paul Bush, Telesat’s Vice President of Broadcasting and Corporate Development. “Like all great Canadian technology advancements, this project will draw expertise from academia, industry, service providers and service users.”

"This is an ideal project for Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) Inc. to be involved in," explains Ron Killeen, managing Director for OCE's Centre for Communications and Information Technology. "It builds a vital partnership between innovators in academia and industry, and has a clear path from research to the marketplace. And, while helping to make Ontario more competitive in the communications sector, it also offers the potential to help bridge the digital divide between urban and rural communities."
