EION Inc. is pleased to announce that it has been selected by the Newfoundland government to provide the enabling technology that will improve broadband access and increase communications capacity for residents in rural areas of the province. The announcement was made last week by the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development.

"Broadband access is a key component of the province's innovation infrastructure and we are committed to bringing that access to previously unserved rural communities," said Minister Hutchings. "This is another step in our commitment to expand broadband coverage for rural communities and businesses throughout Newfoundland and Labrador."

EION Inc. will be working with service providers in Newfoundland to make fixed wireless broadband access available to an additional 24 unserved and underserved communities distributed throughout the island portion of the province.

"EION's contribution is a highly scalable wireless infrastructure that will provide broadband services directly to homes and businesses in the province," said Dale Squires, President of EION Inc. "Having these services available will enhance the ability of rural communities to expand existing businesses, as well as to attract new business. The wireless broadband network will use EION's StarPlus for high throughput backhaul, StarMAX for WiMAX service in higher density locations and the newly introduced StarAccess products to provide ubiquitous wireless access to rural residents and businesses.

StarAccess is an award winning dual-band outdoor WiFi Access point that is capable of creating a coverage area up to 3km in diameter. Within the coverage area, subscribers can access the network using any WiFi enabled device such as a laptop, tablet or smartphone.
